Ankle Bones
Tarsal or Ankle Bones
Ankle Bones are also known as the tarsal bones and are a series of bones that constitute our ankle region. These bones lie between the lower end of fibula and tibia present in the lower section of the leg and the metatarsus. Tarsus refers to as a collection of bones in each foot and just above the tarsus; a joint known as ankle joint is present lying between the tibia and the fibula. Tarsus or ankle bones basically refer to as a clutter of articulating bones and a bone known as calcareous is the largest bone present in the tarsus.
Bones of the Feet
Bones of the feet basically comprise of a collection of bones such as tarsal bones, metatarsus bones and the toe bones or phalanges. Here we will discuss about the ankle bones in depth. Ankle bones are a combination of several bones and we will discuss each of them in detail. The most important bone constituting the tarsal bones is the calcareous also known as the heel bone. It is the largest bone in the tarsus and is responsible for the region known as the heel. The heel bone consists of three major bone structures known as the achilles tendon, tarsal sinus, and the tuber calcanei. Another important bone lying in the ankle region is talus bone which is referred to as astragalus. It is responsible for transferring the body weight to the foot and helps in the proper motion of the foot. Cuboid bone is the third bone which is present in the ankle region and is basically responsible for maintaining the stability for the foot. Then comes the navicular bone which is present in each ankle and its shape is somewhat like a boat. Intermediate cuneiform bone is another important bone present in the tarsus. Being wedge shaped this bone is responsible for the movement of the entire body. Lateral cuneiform bone is found in each ankle and lies between the intermediate cuneiform and cuboid bone. Similarly to intermediate cuneiform bone, this bone is also wedged shape. Finally the last bone which constitutes the ankle bone region is the medial cuneiform and it is also found in each ankle. This bone is also responsible in providing support to the body.
Metatarsal Bones
Metatarsal Bones can be found between the ankle bones and the toe bones. These bones play an important part as they are responsible for proper foot motion and they also provide a proper shape to the foot.
